publishing help

does anyone know how/where i can go to get published?? i want to try and see if i can get my alphabet book published. i have had a number of people push me to do it. it would be a great help and relief if i could publish...i have looked at some things on the web but i do not know where to start or what's a safe route to take. if i could get published it could mean a real difference with being able to take care of my kids with getting divorced. any help would be greatly appreciated.
